Summer Reading Response

          Over the summer I finished the book "Every Day" by David Levithan.  This book was about something that woke up in a different body every single day.  “A” was never one person with a specific body, but “A” was more like just a brain and thoughts.  “A” fell in love with a girl named Rhiannon when they were in the body of a boy named Jason.  In a different body every day, “A” drove how ever long they had to drive to get to Rhiannon. This book brought up a lot of important issues, for example like how people look affect the way that they are treated and the way that people think of them.

          I think this book is really important because it brings up the issue of how the way people look affect the way they are treated.  Since “A” eventually told Rhiannon about their strange life, on different days when Rhiannon and “A” saw each other, Rhiannon definitely treated “A” differently.  When “A” was a girl, Rhiannon would talk politely but she usually wouldn’t hold hands or kiss.  When “A” was once a very overweight boy, Rhiannon could hardly look at “A” without grimacing.  After a while and once Rhiannon starts to get to know “A” very well Rhiannon becomes more comfortable with the idea of different looking people.  This shows how this book makes readers realize how looks really don’t matter as much as personality.

          This book also deals with teenagers trying to find who they are.  For many people this is a difficult part of growing up and this book shows that being persistent and being honest with yourself is the best way to figure out who you are.  “A” was always their own person but they’re also always someone else so it was difficult for “A” to really know who they were.  “A” found Rhiannon, and Rhiannon loving “A” helped “A” realize that in their lifetime, “A” would never have a real relationship with anyone because of the complications.  Realizing this and admitting this helped “A” realize that what they were doing might not be the best thing for Rhiannon.

          In conclusion, this book deals with many struggles that teenagers face in their life every day.  I think that this is really important because it informs readers about society and how it can really affect the way people act around each other every day.  It is hard to be a teenager in today’s society because of some of the issues that this book presents, but reading this book really opens peoples eyes to what is really going on in the world.
